Watching Robert Kennedy, Jr. and his race for the Presidency
Independent President candidate Robert Kennedy, Jr. is pulling in most major polls a solid 10-15 percent of voter support. Will Kennedy be this election’s version of Ross Perot (1992) who effectively knocked President George H. W. Bush out of his re-election bid and paved the way for Bill Clinton to win? Perot overwhelming pulled votes away from Bush. But who does Kennedy pull votes from? And, more importantly (for now), which states is he on the ballot in November?
To the first question, Kennedy seems to pull votes from Biden and Trump not so much on a national level but at a state level. Polls show that, for now, it depends on which state the poll is conducted to figure out whether Biden or Trump are impacted more.
To the second question, Kennedy has only successfully gained a small number of states where he has won the right to be on the ballot (see map below). But that is going to be a changing scenario as with each passing week he is winning ballot access (and why we will need to regularly update this).
Of note, of the key battleground states – the “Must Win States” of Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Nevada, North Carolina, Arizona, and Georgia – Kennedy has only qualified for Michigan. He is awaiting (and expecting) confirmation of being included in Nevada and North Carolina shortly and is working to be included in the others but has yet to either file the necessary voter signatures or announce he is close to reaching the threshold of signatures.
