As well as the work we do for the organisation to support our colleagues and clients, we are also distinguished by what we achieve personally. How we get involved and give back to society and to our local communities, as well as the convictions we stand up for.

In this feature of "We are DWS", a series to highlight the many contributions and achievements of our colleagues inside and outside DWS, we speak to Edward Pym, Product Strategy Manager based in Sydney who also serves his country in the Australian Army Reserves.

Hi Edward. In your position with the Australian Army Reserves, what are you responsible for?

In my current role I am responsible for planning the roles and responsibilities of part time Combat and Construction Engineers in the 2nd Division of the Australian Army. As a junior officer, I typically manage a team of around 35, called on during times of crisis such as floods, forest fires, and the coronavirus pandemic and to support the full time Army for operations at home and overseas.

One of these was in March of this year when I was deployed for three weeks to assist as Military Public Affairs Team Leader, helping to remove debris and repair damage to residential and rural properties across the state of New South Wales following flash floods.

How do you balance dual careers at DWS and as a Reservist?

I have always been incredibly thankful for the support shown by my DWS team and regional management in allowing me to adopt flexible working arrangements. Week to week I serve on Tuesday evenings and some weekends, and stagger my working day to reflect the needs of my DWS teams based in London and Frankfurt.

You were recently selected for the Prince of Wales Scheme Award which recognized both your personal efforts as well as the support DWS has given you as a Reservist. Could you tell us about that?

I was incredibly fortunate to be selected for the service I gave during the Australian bushfires, throughout the coronavirus pandemic, and on multinational army training exercises and this also recognized the support provided by DWS. The award paid for academic training, with my choice to complete the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt qualification which will help to improve my skills and capabilities in my current role on the Product Strategy Team.

Why is helping with humanitarian disaster relief and serving in the Reserves important to you?

Having the opportunity to lead Australian soldiers to assist our communities when they are at their lowest points and seeing the differences we made to both affected families as well as to other emergency services and colleagues means a lot to me. My grandfather served in the Australian Army and it makes me proud to continue his legacy of service.

Thank you, Edward, for speaking with us and for the great work you’re doing in service of your country.
